Southwest General Ranked As One of the Safest Hospitals in the U.S.

Middleburg Heights, OH (Nov. 28, 2012) – It continues to be a “Grade A” for Southwest General when it comes to hospital safety. The Leapfrog Group, along with a panel of national hospital safety experts, announced today its top scoring hospitals in its Hospital Safety Score SM report.
The Hospital Safety Score report ranks hospitals on preventable safety issues, such as infections acquired in the hospital, bedsores or medication errors. The report is the first to use a letter grading system to help consumers compare local hospitals’ safety records.

“Hospitals like this that earn an A have demonstrated their commitment to their patients and their community,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I congratulate Southwest General for its safety excellence and look forward to the day when all hospitals will match this standard.”

Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s nine-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors.

“Continuing to be recognized as an A-graded hospital for patient safety is a resounding endorsement of the quality work being done here at Southwest General,” said Thomas A. Selden, president and CEO, Southwest General Health Center. “I would like to recognize the tremendous efforts of the Medical Staff, nurses and all the employees who provide an excellent patient experience, with a strong focus on patient safety.”
