Geriatric Expert Mentors (GEMs) are specially trained professional staff who have completed a one-year program focusing on the special needs of the aging adult. They have received intense education and training, which results in comprehensive knowledge of common geriatric syndromes such as sleep disturbances, urinary incontinence, cognitive dysfunction (inclusing confusion, delirium and memory loss), and maintaining function, to list a few.
Our GEMs have demonstrated expertise with their overall skill, knowledge and use of best practices when caring for older adults and serve as geriatric resources to others, both in their field and within their hospital department. As a result of their training, many of the nurses have obtained national certification in gerontology through the American Nurses Credentialing Corporation, a division of the American Nurses Association.
