SOUTHWEST GENERAL IS NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED FOR PATIENT CARE AND HEART CARE.  FIVE TIME WINNER AS A TOP HOSPITAL BY THOMSON REUTERS.

Annual Rankings Identify Hospitals with Best Overall Organizational Performance and Those that Set the Benchmark for Inpatient Cardiovascular Services

Middleburg Heights, OH (July 21, 2010) – Southwest General has been named among “100 Top Hospitals” and “100 Top Hospitals for Cardiovascular Care” by Thomson Reuters in its annual ranking. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Southwest General has received both honors, and its sixth time overall making the “100 Top Hospitals” list.

“Being named to this exclusive list for five years running speaks volumes about the dedication and talent of the medical professionals and administrative staff at Southwest General,” said Thomas Selden, president and CEO of Southwest General.  “It is exceedingly difficult to be selected as a national benchmark hospital once, let alone five consecutive years. Thomson Reuters’ research has shown that hospitals that win this award three or more times have particularly high levels of performance over many years.”

The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® National Benchmarks study evaluates performance in 10 areas: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, expenses, profitability, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia. The study has been conducted annually since 1993.

According to the study, if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as Medicare patients treated in the winning hospitals:
• More than 107,500 additional patients would survive each year
• Nearly 132,000 patient complications would be avoided annually
• Expenses would decline by $5.9 billion a year
• The average patient stay would decrease by nearly half a day

The 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks study examined the performance of 971 hospitals by analyzing outcomes for patients with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery or percutaneous cardiovascular interventions (PCI) such as angioplasties. Hospitals making the list boast lower mortality rates for heart attack and heart failure patients; fewer post-operative complications; a shorter average hospital stay; and lower cost per case. Top performing hospitals perform over 50 percent more cardiac surgeries than peer hospitals.
