Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation


 

Southwest General's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Department offers patients comprehensive outpatient services to help prevent injury, restore function after surgery or injury, and enhance well-being.

 

Located at LifeWorks of Southwest General in Middleburg Heights, PM&R also offers selected services at easily accessible Southwest General locations in Brunswick and Strongsville. All locations have free, surface-level parking. Convenient evening and weekend hours are available. A physician order is required for all services except SportsWest.

 

Our Services

Aquatic Rehabilitation
Available to patients who will benefit from the "weightless" environment of water. In this environment, they can work more easily on specific movements to increase strength and mobility and to decrease pain in order to return to function.

 

Balance and Vestibular Training
Available to patients with a diagnosis of abnormal walking pattern. Participants receive extensive education, balance retraining and strategies to assist them in reaching their full balance potential.

Cardiac Rehabilitation
Comprehensive cardiac care and education designed to gradually increase cardiovascular fitness after a cardiac event or surgery.

Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Velocity Testing
Conducted by specially trained physicians to help diagnose the cause of muscle pain and weakness. Electromyography (EMG) records a muscle's electrical activity. Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) measures the speed at which motor nerves conduct impulses. Offered at Southwest General's main campus in Middleburg Heights.  

 

Lymphedema Treatment
A program is designed to treat lymphedema and teach patients and family members how to manage the condition independently at home.

Occupational Therapy
For patients who are learning to return to everyday activities such as bathing, dressing and feeding following an illness, injury or surgery. Focuses on the return of strength, mobility and function.

 

Pediatric Rehabilitation
Uses speech/language, occupational and physical therapies as well as other treatment modalities to help children with special needs including, but not limited to, developmental delays/disabilities, cerebral palsy, speech/language disorders, oral/motor feeding problems, sensory integration/motor impairments, orthopedic disabilities, head trauma, spina bifida, fne motor/handwriting problems, autism/PPD, torticollis and metabolic disorders.

Physical Therapy
Available to patients who have pain, decreased strength or mobility, or decreased functional ability as a result of degenerative conditions, surgery or injury. Addresses all aspects of the body including the spine, shoulders, knees, hips and ankles. Techniques include exercise, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, traction, heat, ice and massage.

 

Scoliois Treatment
A multi-faceted approach to help patients with scoliosis improve posture through corrective breathing and strengthening of muscles.

Speech and Language Therapy
Available to adults and children who have communication disorders caused by an accident, illness, developmental delay or swallowing disorder.

 

Spine Rehabilitation
Comprehensive evaluation and treatment of cervical, thoracic, lumbar or sacral spine problems using a multifaceted approach to therapy.

SportsWest Sports Medicine
Rehabilitation for athletes of all ages and skill levels who are injured while performing a sport or whose injury prevents them from returning to a sport. Focuses on education, injury prevention, rehabilitation and strength training.

Stroke Rehabilitation
A program that integrates ocupational, physical and speech/language therapy to improve the function and communication skills of patients who have suffered a brain injury. Includes group programs for support and recovery.

 

Torticollis Treatment
Physical therapy for children with congenital muscular torticollis, a shortening of the muscles on one side of the neck that causes the head to tilt to one side and the chin to be turned to the opposite side. Therapists work with children and their parents using a combination of exercises to lengthen the shortened muscles and strengthen the opposite muscles. Click here to learn more.
