Revolutionary Radiation Therapy

UH Seidman Cancer Center at Southwest General will soon complete construction to expand the Radiation Oncology area to make room for a TomoTherapy® Hi-Art® treatment system.

TomoTherapy Hi-Art is one of the most advanced and versatile radiation therapy systems available and is used to treat a wide variety of cancers. The system integrates treatment planning, CT Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), and delivery of an advanced form of Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT).

Conventional radiation therapy uses a limited number of fixed beams, delivered from only a few angles. It directs x-rays not only at the tumor but also, unavoidably, at nearby healthy tissue. The TomoTherapy® treatment system is uniquely designed to provide a continuous 360 degree radiation in a helical (spiral) pattern around the patient, delivering tens of thousands of precise beams that conform to the size, shape and location of the patient's tumor. The highly conformal radiation therapy delivered by the TomoTherapy Hi-Art machine allows the delivery of the highest possible dose of radiation while sparing normal tissue as much as possible.
