Radiation Therapy & Cancer Treatment
State-of-the-art Radiation Therapy for Greater Accuracy and Improved Outcomes in Greater Cleveland
Radiation therapy is an important element in effectively treating cancer. The advanced treatment capabilities at UH Seidman Cancer Center at Southwest General include the state-of-the-art TomoTherapy® Hi-Art® treatment system. This revolutionary technology is one of the most advanced and versatile radiation therapy systems available.
TomoTherapy® is used to treat a wide variety of cancers with extreme accuracy. The system integrates treatment planning, CT Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), and delivery of a highly advanced form of Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT).
How Does it Work?
Conventional radiation therapy uses a limited number of fixed beams, delivered from only a few angles. It directs x-rays not only at the tumor but also, unavoidably, at nearby healthy tissue. The TomoTherapy® treatment system is uniquely designed to provide continuous 360 degree radiation in a helical (spiral) pattern around the patient, delivering tens of thousands of precise beams that conform to the size, shape and location of the patient's tumor. The highly conformal radiation therapy delivered by the TomoTherapy Hi-Art machine allows for the highest possible dose of radiation while sparing normal tissue as much as possible.
The Benefits of TomoTherapy®
TomoTherapy's amazing accuracy allows the system to target and destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy, surrounding tissue. For cancer patients, such accuracy and precision means:
More effective treatment delivery
Shorter treatment times
Fewer side effects
Faster recovery times
Less pain and discomfort
