Southwest General's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Department offers a full range of services to help prevent injury, restore function after surgery or injury, and enhance well-being. Each patient has a team of medical professionals involved in his/her evaluation and in the preparation of an individualized plan for recovery. Patients benefit from:

Comprehensive, Quality Services

  • Aquatic Rehabilitation. For patients who will benefit from having the "weightless" environment of water to help them work more easily and to increase strength and mobility with decreased pain.
  • Balance and Vestibular Training. Education, exercises and other strategies to help patients with balance problems.
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation. Comprehensive cardiac care and education designed to gradually increase cardiovascular fitness after a cardiac event or surgery.
  • Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Velocity Testing. To help diagnose the cause of muscle pain and weakness (Offered at Southwest General's main campus in Middleburg Heights).
  • Lymphedema Treatment. Designed to treat lymphedema and teach patients and family members how to manage the condition independently at home.
  • Occupational Therapy. Helps patients return to everyday activities following an illness, injury or surgery by focusing on improving strength, mobility and function.
  • Pediatric Rehabilitation. Includes speech/language, occupational and physical therapies and other treatment modalities for children with special needs including, but not limited to, developmental delays/disabilities, cerebral palsy, speech/language disorders, oral/motor feeding problems, sensory integration/motor impairments, orthopedic disabilities, head trauma, spina bifida, fine motor/handwriting problems, autism/PPD, torticollis and metabolic disorders.
  • Physical Therapy. Helps patients with pain, or decreased strength, mobility or functional ability to recover from illness or injury by improving their strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and general mobility.
  • Scoliois Treatment. A multi-faceted approach for patients with scoliosis to improve posture through corrective breathing and strengthening of muscles.
  • Speech and Language Therapy. For adults and children with communication disorders caused by accident, illness, developmental delay or swallowing disorder.
  • Spine Rehabilitation. Comprehensive evaluation and treatment of cervical, thoracic, lumbar or sacral spine problems using a multifaceted approach to therapy.
  • Sports Medicine. Injury prevention and rehabilitation for athletes of all ages and skill levels.
  • Stroke Rehabilitation. For patients with brain injuries to improve occupational, physical and speech/language skills. Features group programs for support and recovery.
  • Torticollis Treatment. Physical therapy for children with congenital muscular torticollis that causes the head to tilt to one side and the chin to be turned to the opposite side.
  • Upper Extremity and Hand Rehabilitation. A comprehensive program for the rehabilitation from all upper extremity injuries and conditions involving the hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder.

PM&R offers selected services at easily accessible Southwest General locations in Brunswick,  Middleburg Heights and Strongsville. All locations have free, surface-level parking. Convenient evening and weekend hours are available.
