Southwest General provides education, individual assessment and planning services to help patients in our region understand the nature of the diabetes and how to live with their disease. Educational sessions focus on managing diabetes through weight control, exercise, diet and insulin replacement therapy (medication).
Professionally Conducted Diabetes Support Classes
Diabetes nurse professionals work with patients to understand the nature of their disease and the actions they can take to manage their conditions through a series of suppot classes. They include:
Diabetes Basics - This class is designed for those who do not have diabetes education insurance benefits and consists of series of five, one-hour classes which may be used as an introduction to pre-diabetes, diabetes self-care or as a review.
Diabetes Education Program - This class provides very thorough and in-depth diabetes information for patients and their families. It is presented in a combination of one-on-one and small group class settings
Stop the Clock! Pre-Diabetes/Metabolic Syndrome - This class describes pre-diabetes and metabolic syndrome. It is intended to help people avoid or postpone a diagnosis of diabetes by learning self-care management techniques and dietary guidelines.
