spineThe Spine Care Team at Southwest General provides skilled and compassionate evaluation and treatment for patients throughout our region with cervical, thoracic, lumbar or sacral spine conditions.

Part of the Physical Medicne & Rehabilitation Department, the Spine Care Team is specially trained in state-of-the-art techniques to help patients manage their conditions with the goal of leading normal, pain-free lives.

Comprehensive Procedures to Improve Functionality and Reduce Pain

Focused on delivering the best outcome possible for each patient, our Spine Care Team uses a multifaceted approach to care, employing a number of approaches to address the iindividual needs of patients and help them reduce pain, improve mobility and restore symmetry. Therapists may use any of the following:

Therapeutic procedures

  • Stabilization Principle. Through the use of a therapeutic ball or mat exercises, patients learn to strengthen and stabilize their trunk to enable pain-free functioning at work or play.
  • McKenzie Approach. Specialized therapists implement a system of examination and treatment for patients suffering from mechanical spine pain.
  • Aquatic Therapy. A warm-water pool offers an ideal treatment for painful arthritis or post-surgical spine rehabilitation. The weightless environment also benefits patients with disk problems.
  • Muscle Energy Technique. Involves using the body’s muscles to restore symmetry and normal mobility to the spine and pelvis.
  • Craniosacral Therapy. Re-establishes balance within the cranial sacral system, which involves the spine and sacral areas of the body.
  • Strain/Counter Strain. Relieves spine or joint pain using the body’s muscle system.

  • Electrical stimulation
  • Cervical or lumbar tractions
  • Massage
  • Transcutaneous Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation (TENS)

Education

Our Spine Care Team members provide patient education focused on the areas of anatomy, biomechanics of the spine, proper posture and correct performance of daily activities. The education is intended to help patients prevent re-injury and to empower them to manage their lifestyle.

Insurance Information

A physician referral is required for Spine Rehabilitation services.  Most major insurance providers cover Spine Rehabilitation services.
