Southwest General Approves Largest Construction Project in Health Center’s History

Middleburg Heights, OH (July 26, 2012) – Building for the future, Southwest General’s campus will take on a cutting-edge appearance by 2015 as the next phase of the hospital’s strategic facility expansion plan was unanimously approved by the Southwest General Health System and Health Center boards of trustees.

The initial phase of the strategic facility project includes an expanded Emergency Room, critical care unit and underground parking structure, to be complete in Jan. 2014.  The newly approved second phase includes a three-story bed tower with 96 private patient rooms, the renovation of the current semi-private patient rooms into private rooms and a rooftop helipad, to be complete in 2015. The cost of the project will total $128 million.

“This is an exciting time for all of us here at Southwest General,” said Thomas A. Selden, president and Chief Executive Officer, Southwest General. “This new tower will not only change the landscape of the campus, but will continue to ensure our delivery of the state-of-the-art, high-quality care for which Southwest General is nationally recognized. Southwest General is the leading health care provider in the Southwest communities of Cuyahoga County and Northern Medina County, and we intend to stay that way.”

The 100,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art private patient bed tower will be visible from Bagley Road, both east and west, and will provide Southwest General patients private accommodations, improved amenities and enhanced use of natural light and surroundings—including the Cleveland Metroparks on the east side of campus.  Members of both Southwest General’s clinical staff and Medical Staff have been actively involved in the design of the project.

The architect of the project is Cannon Design of Baltimore, Md., locally known for their work on University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center. Construction Management services for the project was awarded to the Albert M. Higley Co.
