Southwest General Recognized Among Best in Cancer Care

Middleburg Heights, OH (March 6, 2012) – University Hospitals (UH) Seidman Cancer Center at Southwest General was recently re-accredited, receiving “Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation” by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. This national recognition is a testament of the comprehensive, quality cancer care provided to our patients.

The voluntary CoC accreditation process ensures that patients have access to a full scope of services to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate and support cancer patients and their families. Patients receiving care at a CoC-accredited program have access to:
• Comprehensive care including a complete range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
• A team approach to coordinate the best available treatment options
• Information about ongoing cancer clinical trials and new treatment options
• Access to prevention and early detection programs, cancer education and support services
• A cancer registry that offers lifelong patient follow-up
• Ongoing monitoring and improvements in cancer care
• Quality care, close to home

To receive a three-year accreditation with commendation, facilities must undergo an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor who is specially trained to evaluate compliance with the 36 standards required for accreditation. Standards represent the full scope of the cancer program—cancer committee leadership; cancer data management; clinical services; research; community outreach and quality improvement.

“Receiving re-accreditation from the Commission on Cancer is a stamp of approval that we are doing something right for our cancer patients,” said Deborah Harwood, clinical manager, UH Seidman Cancer Center at Southwest General. “Our first and foremost priority is to the care of the patients that come through our Cancer Center every day, and assuring them that the care they receive is of top-notch quality. Accreditation is yet another example of our commitment to this priority.”

At the UH Seidman Cancer Center at Southwest General—a community branch of the UH Seidman Cancer Center in downtown Cleveland—team members focus on providing an exceptional level of clinical care as well as compassionate, supportive care to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each patient.

“Our Cancer Center offers patients access to the full scope of services required to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate and support patients with cancer and their families,” said Dr. Gregory Warren, medical director, Medical Oncology, UH Seidman Cancer Center at Southwest General. “We recognize that patients often do not want to travel far for care. We are dedicated to providing exceptional quality care that is conveniently located close to home for residents in the communities we serve.”

Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care.
