Southwest General Sets the Bar High for Care of Stroke and Heart Failure Patients

Middleburg Heights, OH (May 30, 2012) – Each year, 795,000 people across the U.S. experience a stroke. Approximately 5.7 million people suffer from heart failure.

At Southwest General, stroke and heart failure patients can count on getting the right treatment and getting it fast. Achieving and sustaining excellent care and treatment of stroke and heart failure patients has earned Southwest General the prestigious American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines, Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and the Heart Failure Gold Quality Achievement Award.

Maureen Moore, RN, BSN, stroke coordinator for Southwest General’s Primary Stroke Center, part of the hospital’s Heart & Vascular Institute, said this means the hospital has consistently met a high standard of care over a prolonged period of time.

“The Gold Plus Award was achieved by focused commitment,” said Moore. “This was a team effort by passionate doctors, nurses, social workers, rehabilitation staff, paramedics and more. Each team member is very much aware of what is expected of them.”

Receiving recognition for the hospital’s treatment of heart failure and stroke patients is a resounding endorsement of the quality of care being delivered at Southwest General.

“Patients are getting the best care when and where they need it,” explains Robyn Szeles, administrator of Southwest General’s Heart & Vascular Institute. “The goal of the Get With The Guidelines program is to recognize hospitals for sustaining appropriate evidence-based care and protocols that will reduce disability and the number of deaths in these two groups of patients. I am extremely proud of the quality and compassionate patient care provided by our stroke and heart failure teams that has earned us this prestigious recognition.”

Southwest General’s Heart & Vascular Institute was created in 2008, combining heart, vascular and stroke treatments under one umbrella.

In recognition of its excellent care of patients, Southwest General also was re-accredited as a Primary Stroke Center and Heart Failure Center by The Joint Commission earlier this year.

Timing is key when treating a stroke or heart disease. The faster a patient can get to the hospital, the faster medical personnel can determine the correct course of treatment. Calling 9-1-1 and being transported by an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) speeds up treatment. EMS crews alert the hospital and a team is in place when the patient arrives.
