Your Child and Surgery

Child Patient The Surgery Center is specially equipped to handle pediatric surgery. At the time of your child's pre-admission testing, our staff will be available to answer any questions you or your child may have. We would be happy to arrange for a tour of our facility as well.

Please Remember…

One or both parents (or guardians) must remain at The Surgery Center while the child is at our facility. A parent (or guardian) must sign release permits for surgery if the child is under 18 years of age. Written proof of guardianship is also required on the day of surgery. Without written proof, surgery may be delayed.

  • If your child is scheduled for surgery, we encourage you to bring his or her favorite toy for extra comfort.
  • Children may be brought in wearing pajamas. Please bring an empty bottle or sippy cup if your child cannot drink from a cup.
  • Please leave children not having surgery at home, as your child having surgery will need your undivided attention.

We understand that children can be frightened about having surgery. We also know that it is very difficult for the parents, so we try to let you spend as much time as possible with your child. Following surgery, you may stay with your child in the recovery room.

It is very important for your child to drink following surgery. If they have a favorite cup please bring it with you, as this may encourage them to drink. If your child is an infant, bring a bottle of their favorite clear fluid, such as apple juice.

Our anesthesia staff is well trained in the care of pediatric patients, and we provide a separate pediatric recovery area. We encourage you to bring a special toy or blanket, as familiar things will help alleviate anxiety. We also provide a family atmosphere to make your child feel more comfortable including a VCR/DVD for viewing movies and cartoons!
