Dry Needling

What is Trigger Point Dry Needling?

Trigger Point Dry Needling (TDN) is a highly effective physical therapy technique used to treat many musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions.

During treatment, a very fine needle is inserted into painful or knotted muscle areas. This creates a “twitch response,” or a brief contraction of the muscle, which releases tension and helps to decrease pain.

What are the Benefits of TDN?

  • Provide longer-lasting pain relief
  • Eliminate tension
  • Release tight or knotted muscles
  • Heal muscles after injury
  • Speed healing time
  • Increase range of motion

What Conditions Can Be Treated with Trigger Point Dry Needling (TDN)?

Treatable conditions include but are not limited to:

  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Golfer’s or tennis elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Headache, migraine and tension
  • TMJ
  • Sciatica
  • Muscle strain and spasms

Although Trigger Point Dry Needling is a highly effective technique, it is not appropriate for all conditions. Discuss TDN with your physical therapist to find out if it’s appropriate for you.

Is It Covered by Insurance?

TDN is a physical therapy treatment and is NOT acupuncture; therefore, insurance coverage should correspond with your physical therapy benefit.

Trained, Experienced Professionals

Not all medical or physical therapy practitioners are trained to perform TDN. The Southwest General therapists, located at LifeWorks of Southwest General and Northy Royalton Physical Medicine, have advanced training and have been certified through Dr. Ma’s Integrative Dry Needling Institute LLC. Dr. Ma is founder of the American Dry Needling Institute and is an internationally recognized and respected authority on the technique.
