Manual Therapy and Instrument Assisted Manual

Manual physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy using a more “hands-on” approach to apply pressure on muscle tissue or to manipulate joints instead of using a device or machine. Manual therapy may help to reduce pain, decrease muscle spasms and tension and reduce fluid retention in muscles or joints. It also helps increase circulation, muscle flexibility and address joint mobility issues.

Instrument-assisted manual therapy, also known as Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) utilizes specialized therapy instruments to mobilize soft tissue. Physical therapists use this procedure to help promote improved blood flow, range of motion, flexibility, healing and pain reduction. Our physical therapists are trained in Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage (IASTM) and the Graston Technique, a form of instrument assisted manual therapy that utilizes therapy tools to detect and treat many conditions including soft tissue conditions such as:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • IT Band Syndrome
  • Plantar Fasciitis

Instrument assisted manual therapy can also be utilized in conjunction with manual therapy, modalities, and exercises for the treatment of muscle strains, back/neck pain, joint pain, and most extremity injuries.
