Living With Mental Health Issues

When it comes to wellness, your mental health is just as essential as your physical health. Because of the stigma often associated with mental health conditions, it can be easier to openly say, “my head hurts” or, “I have a stomach ache” than to tell someone, “I’m not emotionally well.”

In recognition of May being Mental Health Awareness month, and to promote understanding and support for those living with mental health issues, here are a few tips we all can use to work towards better mental health.

Build a Support Group

Mental health issues can leave you feeling lonely or isolated, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Look for support groups in your area that you can trust, and open up to them about how you feel. You’ll be surprised to see that your thoughts and feelings might not be that different from others around you. Finding the courage to talk to others can help you find comfort and joy and make each day a little better.

Accept The Bad Days, Focus on The Good

It’s ok to have bad days, everyone does. Some days it may be hard to find the energy to get out of bed. The more you focus on the negative aspects of your day and beat yourself up, the harder it will be to work towards better mental health. That’s why celebrating even the smallest accomplishments, like cleaning your room, can help you begin to focus on the good. Find time each day to highlight something good about yourself and life, and when those bad days do creep in, rely on your support group.

Take Care of YOU

Your mental health is better when you’re physically well, too. So, it’s important to work on taking some time to focus on your physical health. Listen to your body; set a regular sleep schedule; and try to eat a balanced diet. These little life changes will help boost your mood and set a positive path toward even more good days.
