Middleburg Heights, OH (Wednesday, June 24, 2015) – Cathy Swinko, RN, BSN, Critical Care Services, Southwest General,
recently received a
2015 Faces of Care Award. Sponsored by
Cleveland Magazine and The Greater Cleveland Nurses Association, the annual Faces of Care
Gala honors area nurses that are making a difference in Northeast Ohio.
Nominated by her coworkers, Cathy has been praised for her outstanding
clinical skills and dedication to her patients. A patient said about Cathy,
“All I remember was the nurse telling me I would be all right, and
then I was taken into emergency surgery. When I woke up after, she was
holding my hand.”
Cathy has worked in Critical Care Services for more than 39 years—with
more than 33 years of service at Southwest General. She has demonstrated
her passion for nursing and patient care while working in the Medical
and Surgical Intensive Care Units, as an open-heart nurse clinician and
educator, and while serving on Southwest General’s Patient and Family
Advocacy Council. However, her dedication and compassion are not just
limited to her patients. Cathy serves as a mentor to new staff and nursing
students at Southwest General and provides support to other nursing colleagues as well.
“Cathy was my rock,” notes a coworker of Cathy’s help
during her fight with breast cancer. “She helped me after surgery,
and she took me to my appointments. But most of all, she gave me support,
hope and prayers.”
Cathy grew up in North Royalton and graduated from Fairview General Hospital
of Nursing in 1975. She earned her BSN from Graceland University a few
years later. Cathy now resides in Litchfield, OH, and enjoys spending
time with her husband, three children and their spouses, and her three
grandchildren. Also, she enjoys the summer months—when they can
boat on Lake Erie.
