Anthem Update

To Our Valued Anthem Patients,

We are writing with important information for you and all Anthem plan members about your care here at Southwest General Health Center. For several months, we have been negotiating a new contract with Anthem but unfortunately, Anthem has refused to even recognize that Southwest General is experiencing the same sharply higher labor costs being seen across health care as well as the many other increased costs driven by inflation. Thus far, Anthem, while increasing the cost of its insurance quotes given to employers, also has refused to share any of those increases with Southwest General, ignoring the spiraling expenses we face.

Our current contract with Anthem ends on December 31, 2022. We have been, and intend to continue, negotiating in good faith and have proposed a two-year contract that is competitive with other insurance contracts at Southwest General. We are committed to negotiating until the eleventh hour, but if we are unable to reach an equitable agreement, your care and the care of your family members covered by Anthem at Southwest, except for emergency services and doctor office visits, will be considered out-of-network on January 1, 2023. Unfortunately, as a result this means that you may be responsible for paying significantly more for services provided by Southwest General Health Center.

This is difficult news for us to share, particularly in this time of rising health care costs and the hardships inflation has imposed on our economy and all of us. Anthem says on its own website that it is “dedicated to delivering better care to our members, providing greater value to our customers and helping improve the health of our communities.” At Southwest, health is our passion and, as you know, quality is our focus. We, too, have a long history of commitment to the health and well-being of our communities. It is our sincere hope that the commitment to health care excellence and compassion that we share with Anthem will lead us to an equitable agreement so that you and your family can continue receiving the medical services you need from the caregivers you know and trust at Southwest General Health Center.

We know you or your family members may have medical appointments scheduled on or after January 1, 2023. At this time, typical doctor office visits will remain in-network. But other care or tests ordered at the hospital could be out-of-network. We realize you may have questions that are not covered here or on our website. You can direct those questions to our business office email at InsuranceQuestions@swgeneral.com, or speak with your benefits manager at your place of work.

We are grateful and honored to serve the medical needs of you and your family and we appreciate the trust you have in us. I again want to emphasize that we are dedicated to reaching a fair and equitable contract with Anthem so there is no disruption to the exceptional medical care you expect and deserve from the excellent caregivers of Southwest General Health Center.
