PGY-2

Emergency Medicine

PGY-2 Program Purpose

PGY-2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY-1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY-2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY-2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Southwest General’s Emergency Medicine Residency provides a clinically progressive program where the resident will function as a highly integrated member of the interdisciplinary emergency medicine team. Our pharmacy residents will become proficient at managing complex and critically ill patients in a multidisciplinary team approach. Direct patient and caregiver contact allows our resident to improve patient outcomes by optimizing medication management and adherence.

2023 OSHP Best Practice Advancement Success Award

Demonstrating our clinical progressive culture, we are excited to announce that the Southwest General Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacy Program has been selected as the winner of the Ohio Society of Health-System Pharmacy (OSHP) Best Practice Advancement Success Award. This annual award recognizes innovative Ohio Health-Systems that demonstrate pharmacy practice advancements in accordance with the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacy (ASHP) Pharmacy Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI). Our program was the first in the state of Ohio to develop a collaborative practice agreement allowing emergency medicine pharmacists to administer injectable medications in a wide range of clinical scenarios.

Our work was recently published in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy (AJHP) titled:
From policy to practice: Implementation of emergency medicine pharmacist medication administration.
