Level II Neonatal and Maternity Care

Baby receiving Level 2 careSouthwest General’s Cosgrove Maternity Center has been licensed by the Ohio Department of Health as a Level II Neonatal and Maternity Care facility.

This designation makes the Cosgrove Maternity Center the only Level II facility in southwestern Cuyahoga County and northern Medina County.

Expanding upon Level I abilities, Level II designation adds a higher level of care for moms and babies, including:

  • Level II (32+ weeks of pregnancy) care for appropriate moderate to high-risk maternity patients
  • Broader neonatal care in our Level II Special Care Nursery for babies who:
    • Are born up to eight weeks premature (at or after 32 weeks gestation)
    • Weigh at least 3.3 pounds (1500 grams)
    • Need special care for temporary breathing problems, feeding issues, jaundice, low blood sugar or other complications.
  • 24/7 access to a team of specialists experienced in maternity and newborn care

Our Level II Center is supported by an experienced team of skilled nurses, obstetricians, neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, anesthesiologists, respiratory therapists and other specialists, equipped with the advanced technology to care for you and your newborn.

Here, women can feel confident about receiving high-quality care, even when circumstances require higher-level resources. Should additional needs present, Southwest General has Neonatal Nurse Practitioners and Obstetricians on site 24/7 for expert care. Additionally, we work closely with our partner, University Hospitals, to stabilize and transfer mom and baby if needed.

We recognize that having a baby who needs special care can be a stressful time for you and your family. Our compassionate, experienced Maternity staff is dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing environment and to providing the expert care and information you need.

Our Level II Special Care Nursery features private rooms and state-of-the art monitoring equipment designed specifically for babies with special health care needs. While your baby is in the Nursery, our staff will provide personalized care for your baby, answer any questions you may have, help to promote bonding with your newborn, and give hands-on instruction in caring for your baby. Plus, there are other disciplines ready to support you and your baby, including dieticians, physical and occupational therapists and Social Service staff for any home needs.

PLEASE NOTE: For safety, to access our Level II Special Care Nursery or Well-Baby Nursery, parents must continue to wear their identification bands, which identify you with your infant, until your baby is discharged. Before other family members are permitted to visit the Level II Special Care Nursery, you will need to check with nurse caring for your baby. Additionally, a parent/significant other with an identification band must be present with any visitor(s) at the bedside.
