Maternity Visitor information
Cosgrove Maternity Center Visitor Guidelines
Thank you for choosing the Cosgrove Maternity Center at Southwest General.
We want you and your family to feel comfortable, supported and safe throughout
your stay. These visitor guidelines help us protect the safety, security
and privacy of our patients and their babies.
During Labor and Delivery
-
During labor: Your support person and up to two additional adult visitors, aged 18 or
older, are welcome. All visitors will be screened at the Maternity entrance.
-
During delivery: Your support person and up to two additional adult visitors may be present
at your request. For the safety of you and your baby, the care team may
need to limit visitors based on your individual circumstances.
-
Before a Cesarean section: One support person may accompany you before your Cesarean section. One
or two additional visitors may be permitted at the discretion of the nursing
team to ensure your care team has adequate space and time to prepare you
for surgery.
-
During a Cesarean section: One support person may be permitted in the Operating Room when determined
appropriate by the medical team.
-
Waiting areas: To maintain a safe and comfortable environment, we ask that large groups
do not gather in the Maternity waiting room. The number of visitors in
the waiting area may be limited as needed.
After Delivery: Postpartum Visitors
Visiting hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. for healthy visitors.
These hours provide families with quiet time in the morning and evening
and allow our nurses to provide education and care without interruption.
- Please limit visitors to four people at a time due to space limitations
in patient rooms.
- Visitors should clean their hands before contacting the patient or baby.
- Healthy siblings of the baby may visit during regular visiting hours when
accompanied by a responsible adult, unless additional hospital visitor
restrictions are in place.
- During flu and RSV season, October 18, 2026-April 1, 2027, non-sibling
children are not permitted to visit.
- One support person, aged 18 or older, may stay overnight with the patient and baby.
- Visitors may bring food into the patient’s room.
Please do not visit if you are sick or experiencing symptoms of illness.
Visitor guidelines may change during flu and RSV season or based on current
health and safety needs.
Additionally, for the safety and privacy of our patients, visitors may
not wait in the hallways. Please use the designated Maternity waiting room.
Meals for Visitors
Visitors should make arrangements for their own meals. One support person
staying overnight may order a complimentary breakfast.
The Courtyard Café (Cafeteria) is located on the basement level
and is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Market Twenty 4 Seven also
is available on the first floor (Main Lobby).
Special Care Nursery Visitor Guidelines
Babies in our Special Care Nursery (SCN) require additional care and protection
while they grow stronger. We encourage families to spend time with their
babies, while following these guidelines to help us maintain a safe, clean
and healing environment.
Visiting Your Baby in the SCN
-
Receiving updates: Only the two individuals who receive identification wristbands will be
provided with updates by the care team. Your wristband number will serve
as your code when calling for information. This helps us protect your
baby’s privacy.
-
Parents and guardians: Parents/guardians are welcome to visit the SCN at any time, including
overnight.
-
Additional visitors: Up to four healthy adult visitors may be designated for the duration of
the baby’s stay and may visit until 8 p.m. No more than three people
may be at the bedside at one time so our team can safely provide care.
Please coordinate visits with your care team to avoid feeding times, procedures
or other scheduled care. At least one parent or designated support person
wearing an identification wristband must accompany visitors.
-
Siblings: Healthy siblings may visit for one hour during a planned visit coordinated
with the care team. A responsible adult must always supervise siblings,
and children should wash their hands before entering. During flu and RSV
season, October 1, 2026-April 1, 2027, siblings are not permitted in the
SCN to help protect our most vulnerable patients.
-
Maintain a quiet environment: Please speak softly while visiting. Some babies may require limited stimulation,
and your care team will let you know about any special needs.
-
Cell phones: Keep cell phones at a low volume and clean them with wipes provided. Please
limit cell phone use so you can focus on your baby, participate in care
and education and minimize stimulation for other babies in the SCN.
-
Hand hygiene and illness: All visitors must wash their hands when entering the unit and before and
after providing care for a baby. Please do not visit the SCN if you are
sick or experiencing symptoms of illness.
-
Medical equipment: Never turn off, adjust or touch alarms or medical equipment. If you have
a question or concern, please use the nurse call button for assistance.
-
Food and personal items: Food is not permitted in SCN patient rooms; water is permitted. Balloons,
flowers and outside packages are not permitted. Please ask your care team
which personal items may be kept in the room.
Thank you for helping us maintain a safe, supportive environment for our
patients, babies, families and staff.
