Our Hospice volunteers make all the difference in the world to our patients and to their families and loved ones. Without them the breadth of hospice services we offer could never match the need for the services we face each day.

Hospice Volunteering

As a hospice volunteer, you will receive specialized orientation by our professional staff. This training will help ensure that you are comfortable in your volunteer role and prepared to be a vital part of our Hospice Services team. There are many opportunities available in various areas, and we strive to match your skills and interests with our needs.

Volunteer opportunities include patient care, greeting and welcoming visitors, answering phones, office functions, pet visitation and community outreach.

The volunteer program is open to volunteers who can commit to four hours of service per week.

Types of Volunteers

• Patient Care Volunteers. As a patient care volunteer you may provide hands-on assistance to our patients and their families in many ways. In our residential center, you may be helping the patient with things they can’t do alone, assisting with meals and providing comfort care. You also may be a person with a friendly face and a warm smile, or you may be a listener with an empathetic ear who is a reassuring presence. Patients at our center also enjoy visits from our specially trained pet visitation dogs. In the patient’s home, you may be a provider of respite for the caregiver. In area nursing homes and assisted living facilities, you may be a voice to read a book or just talk.
• Administrative and Outreach Volunteers. Volunteers who provide administrative support are making it possible for our employees to focus on the needs of our patients. Greeting patients and welcoming visitors, answering phones, filing and general office duties are just a few of the many tasks provided by our volunteers. As a community outreach volunteer, you will provide information about our hospice services at special events, community health fairs, etc.

Training

Hospice volunteer training takes place at The Thomas P. Perciak Family Residential Hospice, at 19659 Drake Road, in Strongsville. All volunteers are interviewed by the volunteer coordinator prior to the training sessions. A background check, including fingerprinting, is included in the training process. Training is based on the service area chosen by each volunteer.
