Middleburg Heights, OH (Monday, Dec. 12, 2022) – Southwest General is pleased to announce a collaboration with University Hospitals (UH) Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute to provide an expanded cardiac surgery presence at the hospital’s Main Campus in Middleburg Heights.

“Through this collaboration, Southwest General will increase the number of cardiothoracic surgeons on our Medical Staff as well as expand access to critical, life-saving heart care within the communities we serve,” said William A. Young, Jr., president and chief executive officer, Southwest General.

Additionally, the collaboration will help sustain the level of high-quality care already offered to patients, provide 24/7 coverage, and enhance cardiac surgery program development at Southwest General by further supporting high-tech procedures such as the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure.

“By bringing together highly trained physicians and surgeons, the latest treatments and techniques and leading-edge technology, Southwest General can continue to offer outstanding care for a wide-range of heart-related conditions,” said Young. “We look forward to continuing to work with our partner, University Hospitals, to bring our community members the high-quality care they’ve come to expect, close to home.”

“We are looking forward to strengthening this partnership with Southwest General for the benefit of our patients,” said Marc Pelletier, MD, Chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery at UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute, who will now perform surgeries at Southwest General.

“It is our duty as doctors to help people and at UH it is our mission to bring quality care closer to home for people across Northeast Ohio,” said Mehdi Shishehbor, DO, MPH, PhD, president, UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute, and Angela and James Hambrick Chair in Innovation. “Now with two major cardiac surgery programs in this region, UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute will continue to provide life-saving care to patients without burdening them with lengthy travel.”

For more than 25 years, Southwest General and University Hospitals have collaborated to offer an array of comprehensive services, advanced technologies and exceptional facilities. Through this unique partnering agreement, Southwest General offers its communities local access to world-renowned UH services, including UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Neonatal Services, UH Seidman Cancer Center and more.
